Parents: Learn about teen medicine abuse

Stop Medicine Abuse Badges and Widgets

There are many ways you can help spread the word about the Stop Medicine Abuse initiative and associated resources for parents. As a first step, we hope you will consider sharing the resources on this site with friends and family. In addition, we have created embeddable images and widgets to help you spread the word:

Using the Stop Medicine Abuse educational icon as a badge

This image is appearing on the packaging of most over-the-counter cough medicines. The Stop Medicine Abuse educational icon was developed to serve as a tool to alert parents to the potential for teen abuse of cough medicines containing dextromethorphan.

It’s a useful way that you can tell other parents about the resources at this site and it serves as a mini-PSA to anyone who picks up the box or bottle of over-the-counter cough medicine containing dextromethorphan. The goal is to make everyone who sees the icon aware of the issue of medicine abuse among teens, and then direct them to StopMedicineAbuse.org where they can access the resources they need to talk with their teens.

With your help, even more people will see the icon and hear the call to take action against medicine abuse.

One simple way you can get involved—and spread the word about the need to get educated and prevent medicine abuse—is using this icon as a badge on your profile across any of the different social networks to which you belong. To start, use the right-click button on your mouse (PC) or hold option (Mac) and click here; select “Save File As” to download the image. Remember where you saved it so that you can do things like post it to your Facebook wall or make it your Twitter profile image.

To post the image to your Facebook wall:

  1. Log in to Facebook.
  2. Click on the “What’s on your mind?” box at the top of the page you see when you first log into Facebook.
  3. Select “Add Photos.”
  4. Select “Upload a Photo” and select the file for the Stop Medicine Abuse educational icon.
  5. Press “Share!”

To make the icon your Twitter profile image:

  1. Log in to Twitter.
  2. In the upper navigation bar, click “Settings.” (Note: Your settings link might be in the right-hand sidebar under your name if your account has the new search integration.)
  3. Click the 5th settings tab, “Picture.”
  4. Click “Browse” and select the file for the Stop Medicine Abuse educational icon.
  5. Click “Save” at bottom.

There are also many other ways you can share the icon. You can make it your buddy icon on Instant Messenger, your avatar on Google, or your profile image on any other social network to which you may belong!
