Recent studies have spotlighted medicine abuse as an alarming trend among young people—including over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicines—in which teens are intentionally taking large amounts of cough medicine to get "high" from the active ingredient dextromethorphan.
To raise awareness among parents and community leaders about this troubling trend, the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the trade group which represents the leading makers of OTC cough medicines, are partnering with communities nationwide to help raise awareness at the local level about cough medicine abuse. Tools and materials are available for all communities wishing to participate in this inaugural awareness initiative.
For further information on participating, contact CADCA's Communications & Publications Manager Natalia Martinez Duncan at 703-706-0560, ext. 256, or nmartinez@cadca.org.
