When it comes to preventing drug and alcohol abuse in your community, there is no one-fits-all approach. The Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) works with communities to create customized strategies to combat risky behaviors, like teen cough medicine abuse, that are based on a community’s unique problems and circumstances. Through town halls, CADCA provides members of the community with the information and tools they need to assess their local substance abuse-related problems and develop a comprehensive plan to address them.
The winner of this year’s annual Dose of Prevention award is the Youth Community Coalition (YC2) from Columbia, Mo. This award recognizes Community Anti-Drug Coalition (CADCA) member coalitions that have helped raise awareness about the dangers of over-the-counter cough medicine abuse in their community.
YC2 works toward decreasing substance abuse and promoting healthy behaviors among Columbia’s youth to foster their positive development. In addition to substance abuse, YC2 addresses issues that impact youth: education, pregnancy, homelessness, violence, suicide, poverty, employment, and more. Last year, YC2 took on cough medicine abuse and worked in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, public school districts, hospitals, the county health department, and a local university to educate the community about over-the-counter cough medicine abuse.
Tammy Walsh, the newest mom to join Five Moms campaign, discussed how to engage communities to stop cough medicine abuse at the Community Anti-Drug Coalition America’s (CADCA) National Leadership Forum on February 7. To learn more about Tammy’s experience at the forum, read her post for FiveMoms.com.
The forum was a four-day conference in National Harbor, Md., that was packed with multiple opportunities to learn the latest strategies to fight substance abuse and hear from nationally known experts and policymakers. The forum brought together more than 2,500 participants representing community anti-drug coalitions from all regions of the country, government leaders, youth, addiction treatment professionals, researchers, educators, law enforcement professionals and faith-based leaders.
